I discovered I have sleep apnea about five years ago. At the time, I was really sleepy at work. At first I thought it was just boredom in meetings. But I was also concerned so I went to see a doctor who specializes in sleep apnea. And of course, he prescribed CPAP for me.
Over the years, I tried five or six different styles of mask. When I used it, I did feel better but none were comfortable enough for everyday use. It’s also cumbersome, so I didn’t want to travel with it. But when I traveled to see my daughter, without my machine, I was tired for a week after I got home. I got to the point where I just couldn’t take it anymore.
That's when I found oral appliance therapy. It's not intrusive, easier to use, and I can travel with it. I sleep throughout the night and when I wake up I don’t feel so many aches and pains. It’s not that I wake up more refreshed than when I used CPAP, it’s that the oral appliance is simply more comfortable to wear every day.
