Karen’s Story "From mixed media collage to sculpture and welding, I’m enjoying my hobbies more — because I’m sleeping more!"

I discovered I have sleep apnea about five years ago. At the time, I was really sleepy at work. At first I thought it was just boredom in meetings. But I was also concerned so I went to see a doctor who specializes in sleep apnea. And of course, he prescribed CPAP for me.

Over the years, I tried five or six different styles of mask. When I used it, I did feel better but none were comfortable enough for everyday use. It’s also cumbersome, so I didn’t want to travel with it. But when I traveled to see my daughter, without my machine, I was tired for a week after I got home. I got to the point where I just couldn’t take it anymore.

That’s when I found oral appliance therapy. It’s not intrusive, easier to use, and I can travel with it. I sleep throughout the night and when I wake up I don’t feel so many aches and pains. It’s not that I wake up more refreshed than when I used CPAP, it’s that the oral appliance is simply more comfortable to wear every day.

I moved to the Bay Area 40 years ago, and now live in Emeryville, a suburb of Oakland, CA. I like the weather, the people and the art community. I make various types of art, from mixed media collage to sculpture and welding. In the coming months, I’ll be setting up my own studio. Now that I’m sleeping better I have more energy to enjoy my hobbies.

Location Guide: Lake Merritt has the dual distinction of being America’s first National Wildlife Refuge (back in 1870) and the only urban saltwater lake. Nicknamed the Jewel of Oakland, the 155-acre area is a popular spot for locals out for a jog or for a lunch break stroll.

Comment from Karen's Dentist
Karen was referred to me for an oral appliance by a sleep physician after reporting that her difficulty sleeping and daytime sleepiness was affecting her life, including her motivation and creativity with her tile mosaic and welding artwork. I chose the Respire Blue for Karen. Other patients have had great success because of its comfort and therefore compliance. Karen says that she now feels more like her old self with more energy, a sharper mind, and renewed motivation.
