Years ago, a friend of mine suggested I take the exam to become a Metropolitan Train Authority (MTA) train operator. 16 years later, I’m happy to say that I’m still driving. I mostly work at night. Driving a work train that carries supplies to construction areas. It’s so different and interesting. Most people think trains just take them places, but there’s so much going on behind the scenes to make each operation work. Communication. Coordination. That’s why I’m so proud of my job.
Every year, I have to take a physical for work. And this past year, they required everyone in my division to get tested for sleep apnea. My test came back one point over ‘mild’ sleep apnea. So I had a choice—wear a CPAP mask or get an oral appliance. I knew that the CPAP machine could be uncomfortable to sleep in for some people, so I went with the oral appliance. This decision literally changed my life.
I was prescribed my Whole You™ Sleep Appliance last fall. There was an adjustment period at first, getting used to adding it into my night time routine. But it wasn’t long before I began to feel like I was getting more quality sleep. I felt more rested in the morning, even when I have “interrupted sleep,” due to my odd work schedule. Now, putting in my oral appliance is just something I do after brushing my teeth before bed—it’s very comfortable—and I’m not snoring anymore.
Ever since, I feel much more rested. I have the energy to go out and do the things I love. I even started doing Zumba. It’s a lot of moving and dancing. People talk about getting personal trainers, but this is way more fun and still a good work out. Plus, taking classes is difficult because of my job.
I was born in Harlem and grew up in Midtown. Then 10 years ago, I moved back to Harlem. What’s not to love about NYC? I took a subway, this time as a passenger, for today’s photo shoot in Washington Square Park. When I was young, I would often hang out here with my friends. It’s my favorite place to come and I have lots of memories here. NYC is all energy. And thanks to my Whole You™ Sleep Appliance, I get more restful sleep and have more of my own energy to explore and do things around the city.
