Freedom to Sleep Launches Campaign to Provide Free Sleep Apnea Treatment to Military Personnel
Freedom to Sleep, a non-profit organization, announced today that it would be organizing complimentary oral appliance treatment, including fittings for the devices, for U.S. service members suffering from sleep apnea. Oral appliances (OA) are an alternative to CPAP therapy for people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or for those with severe OSA that cannot tolerate CPAP. Freedom to Sleep has secured 50 OA’s donated by two of the nation’s leading oral appliance providers, Whole You and SomnoMed, and is working with their network of national dental sleep professionals to identify qualifying participants.
Sleep apnea is estimated to affect almost 30 million people within the U.S., according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Usually CPAP is the only treatment option provided to patients, however, it can be particularly unsuitable for military personnel suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). A 2010 study in the Chest Journal by The American College of Chest Physicians found that more than 70 percent of those diagnosed with PTSD are also at a higher risk for being diagnosed with OSA. The study also noted that OSA patients with PTSD had significantly lower rates of adherence to CPAP therapy. This may create an additional obstacle to care in this already challenging patient population.
“The heroes of our nation deserve a good night’s sleep,” said Dr. Michael Krahe, founder of Freedom to Sleep. “Thanks to partners like Whole You and our network of dentists, dozens will now be able to. From our conversations with veterans, we know that CPAP isn’t always a comfortable solution, as the mask and loud noise can bring back unpleasant memories and perversely prevent a restful night’s sleep in some cases. Oral appliances are far less obtrusive and easier for them to acclimatize to.”
Freedom to Sleep and their partners will monitor the participants’ oral appliance treatment results, publishing a study with clinical data and key learnings. To date, treatment options for active military and veterans with OSA have not been researched fully. The findings from the Freedom to Sleep study could point to better treatment regimens for service members in the U.S., particularly for those who suffer from PTSD.
“We are proud to be able to support U.S. service members through our partnership with Freedom to Sleep,” said David Walton, CEO of Respire Medical, the flagship lab of Whole You Sleep Appliance. “Our customized oral appliances have helped OSA sufferers finally realize a great night’s sleep and allowed them to live a full life, no one deserves this more than the men and women who serve our country.”
Freedom to Sleep is reaching out to the dental community to help identify active military and veterans who might be suitable for an oral appliance. To find out more or get involved, please visit https://www.wholeyou.com/medical-products/sleep-appliances/freedom-to-sleep
